Direct Answer

We create custom dragon boat paddle projects by turning a team’s logos, colors, jersey references, sponsor marks, regional identity, or original artwork into a paddle design for review and approval before production. The project combines two separate decisions:
  1. The paddle platform, handle system, quantity, and technical requirements
  2. The artwork, layout, colors, and team identity shown on the blade
A successful custom paddle combines team identity with the specifications needed for training and racing.

A Custom-Paddle History Dating to 2015

We publicly documented our custom dragon boat paddle program on May 4, 2015. That early announcement described team graphics as integrated into the blade and showed that custom design was part of our product strategy near the beginning of the company. In 2017, we documented an artist collaboration with Gareth W. Smith and described a Direct Carbon Printing process used on the carbon paddle products featured in that collaboration. The artwork was printed before molding, illustrating our early focus on combining functional paddle construction with original design.
Production methods and available paddle platforms can change. Our current custom-paddle page contains today’s order requirements, design service, pricing, quantities, and production timing.

The Custom Paddle Process

1. Define the Project

Start with the practical requirements:
  • Team, club, association, school, business, or event name
  • Number of paddles required
  • Individual or team-wide use
  • Adjustable handle preference
  • Target delivery date
  • Competition or event requirements
  • Shipping destination
These details determine what can be quoted and produced before artwork is finalized.

2. Gather the Design Materials

Useful design inputs include:
  • Team logo files
  • Jersey or uniform photographs
  • Official team colors
  • Sponsor logos
  • Country, province, state, or regional symbols
  • Existing artwork or visual references
  • Examples of designs the team likes or wants to avoid
High-quality source files make it easier to produce clean graphics. When a team has only a logo or a general idea, our design team can use those elements to develop a paddle concept.

3. Build the Paddle Layout

The artwork must be adapted to the blade shape rather than placed on a rectangular page. The design process considers:
  • How the main image fills the blade
  • Whether the logo remains readable at a distance
  • How colors appear across the paddle surface
  • Placement of team and sponsor marks
  • Balance between the two sides of the blade
  • Required Hornet, model, and approval markings
  • Whether the design should look identical across the team or include controlled variations

4. Review the Design Proof

We provide a design proof for review before production. The team should check:
  • Spelling of names and organizations
  • Logo accuracy
  • Color direction
  • Sponsor placement
  • Blade orientation
  • Quantity and handle options
  • Any event date or commemorative wording
Production should begin only after the authorized team contact approves the final design and order details.

5. Confirm the Paddle Platform and Handle

The graphic does not replace the underlying paddle specifications. Confirm the current:
  • Hornet paddle platform
  • Clamp or Leverlock option
  • Adjustable length range
  • Approximate weight
  • IDBF license information for the selected model
  • Warranty terms
  • Quantity and production schedule

6. Produce and Deliver the Team Order

After design approval and order confirmation, the project moves into production. Delivery timing depends on the order size, production schedule, shipping destination, and any event deadline. Teams should allow enough time for artwork review, revisions, production, freight, and local delivery rather than working backward from race week alone.

What Can Be Customized?

Custom paddle artwork can be developed around:
  • Team and club logos
  • National or regional identity
  • Jersey and uniform colors
  • Sponsor graphics
  • School and corporate branding
  • Championship or festival artwork
  • Hall of Fame and recognition programs
  • Breast cancer survivor team identity
  • Community and nonprofit team programs
  • Original artwork created for the team

Artist Collaborations and Original Artwork

Our 2017 partnership with Gareth W. Smith showed how artwork developed outside traditional sports graphics could be adapted to paddle products. Artist collaborations can work when:
  • The artist’s style fits the paddle shape
  • The artwork can be reproduced clearly
  • Rights and permissions are documented
  • The design remains functional as a team or product graphic
  • The final layout respects required branding and product markings
The same principles apply when a team commissions an artist or uses internally created artwork.

Example: Phoenix Desert Dragons

Our current custom-paddle page includes a project with Phoenix Desert Dragons, a breast cancer survivor team in Phoenix, Arizona. The team brought a design direction, and we adapted it to the paddle template, provided a proof for approval, and managed production for a matching team set. This example shows the practical value of a custom program: the team can begin with an idea and receive a coordinated paddle design without needing to prepare a production-ready blade file on its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. A logo, team colors, jersey references, and a description of the desired style can provide the starting point for a custom concept. Check the live custom-paddle page for current project requirements.

Are custom paddles only for competitive teams?

No. Custom projects can be created for clubs, schools, associations, corporate teams, community programs, events, commemorative presentations, and recognition programs.

Can a team use sponsor logos?

Yes, when the team has permission to use the marks and supplies suitable artwork. Sponsor placement should be approved during the proof stage.

Does custom artwork change the paddle specifications?

The artwork and paddle specifications are separate parts of the project. The selected model, handle, length range, weight, approval information, and warranty should be confirmed for the actual order.

How early should a team begin?

Begin early enough to allow for design development, revisions, approval, production, shipping, and event deadlines. Current timing should be confirmed through the live custom-paddle page.

Are custom graphics stickers?

Our historical custom-paddle and artist-collaboration records describe graphics integrated into paddle production rather than applied as a simple removable surface sticker. The exact production method depends on the current paddle platform.
